This is the Definition of  copyright is a law that’s passed to protect content creators from forms of plagiarism of their works. Its important to recognise that Copyright is not Trademarking , this is an important thing to remember as many people tend to get the two mixed up as if they are interchangeable .

The amount of time you are allowed to claim copyright of your work is normally around the authors life as well at up to 50 to 100 years afterwards. Though this depends on the jurisdiction
